Building teachers' environmental science literacy and their capacity to foster it in their students

Abstract: The Baltimore Partnership for Environmental Science Literacy is one of four professional development efforts of a national LTER-based project funded by the NSF's Math Science Partnership (MSP) program. In summer 2009, teachers participated either in an 8 day summer workshop or a 6 week research fellowship coupled with a 12 session graduate course. The goals were to help teacher: 1) attend and respond to student thinking, 2) mast and focus on key principles, 3) Add a scientific discourse to students' toolkit, 4) Build concepts through inquiry, 5) Teach about & thru real world, local problems, 6) Build towards citizenship and civic engagement, and 7) Be responsive to culture and place. Preliminary results will be presented.
